WHAT ARE THE MAIN THINGS YOU LOOK FOR WHEN YOU READ A SCRIPT?
As cliché as it sounds – I’m looking for an original voice, a point of view, knowledge and respect of screenwriting principles and formats, and a great character that I can relate to or at least want to watch. And an original and commercial hook to a story.
WHAT MAKES BELIEVABLE CHARACTERS?
Most of all, believable dialogue makes for believable characters. Then I ask myself if I can relate to them, or know someone like them, or could picture them as real people.
WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE YOU SEE?
Unoriginal copycat ideas, the lack of a second act, or the lack of genuine dialogue which shows a lack of originality or a voice. Writers need to know what makes for a commercial script and what does not.
WHAT KIND OF SCRIPTS ARE YOU MORE LIKELY TO CONSIDER?
Comedies with new hooks or original and funny concepts, scary or suspenseful horror/thrillers, original concept action scripts, or quirky and different indie-types.
WHAT’S THE BEST SCRIPT YOU’VE EVER READ?
This is an impossible question, but just a couple of recent favorites include Recount, August:Osage County, I Wanna **** Your Sister, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Charlie Wilsons War…there are tons of them, but not all make for great movies.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIEGOING EXPERIENCE?
Sitting at the premiere of a movie you have worked your ass off on knowing you made it as well as possible. And everyone else in the theater appreciates and enjoys it as much as you do.
